Stage 1 — Welcome to Self-Awareness
What You’ll Learn:
• Why self-awareness is the skill before every other skill
• How this 4-week course works
• What you will be able to do by the end of June
Core Lesson:
Self-awareness is the ability to recognize what you are feeling, why you might be feeling it, and how it is affecting your thoughts, body, and behavior — while it is happening.
In tennis, self-awareness matters because emotions rarely stay hidden. They show up in:
• Footwork (tight, sluggish, rushed)
• Body language (shoulders drop, head down, racket held differently)
• Self-talk (“I always do this,” “Here we go again”)
• Shot selection (angry forehand, scared second serve) • Effort level (giving up, going through the motions)
• Recovery speed (one bad point becomes three bad games)
Most players wait until they are already frustrated, anxious, or spiraling before they notice anything is wrong. Self-awareness helps you catch the emotional drift earlier — sometimes just a few seconds earlier. And those few seconds change everything.
Apply It Today:
Before your next practice or match, take 60 seconds and ask yourself: What am I feeling right now? Do not judge the answer. Do not try to change it. Just notice it. Write it down: “Before practice, I felt __.”
