Stage 6 — Self-Awareness Is Tennis Awareness
Stage Title: Self-Awareness Is Tennis Awareness
Estimated Time: 10 minutes
What You’ll Learn:
• That awareness means noticing what is happening inside you while it is happening
• How to practice awareness during tennis activities
Core Lesson:
Self-awareness in tennis means being able to notice:
• What you are feeling during a point, not just after
• What your body is doing while you are playing
• What your inner voice is saying as it is saying it
• What triggers your emotional shifts in real time Most players only become aware after the fact.
After the double fault. After the lost game. After the match. Self-awareness trains you to notice earlier — sometimes during the point, often between points, and ideally before the emotion starts controlling your behavior.
The Awareness Ladder:
Level 5 — After the match 4 — After the game 3 — After the point 2 — Between points 1 —
During the point Description
“I don’t know what happened out there.” “I got tight serving for it.” “I rushed that last shot.” “I’m feeling pressure right now.” “My body is tightening; I need to breathe.”
The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to move up the ladder. From after the match → between points is huge progress.
Apply It Today:
In your next practice or match, try to catch one emotional shift at Level 2 (between points) or Level 1 (during the point).
Write down: “I noticed myself feeling __ between points. I caught it before the next point started.”
Reflection Prompt:
What level of the awareness ladder do you usually live on? What would it take to move up one level?
