Stage 13 — The Language of the Player
Stage Title: The Language of the Player
Estimated Time: 10 minutes
What You’ll Learn:
• How your inner voice shapes your emotional experience
• The difference between helpful self-talk and harmful self-talk
• A simple question: “Would you talk to a teammate the way you talk to yourself?”
Core Lesson:
Common harmful self-talk patterns in tennis: Harmful Self-Talk Labeling Catastrophizing Perfectionism Comparison Fortune-telling Shoulds What It Sounds Like “I’m a choker.” “I’m mentally weak.” “I always do this.” “This match is over.” “I’m going to lose.” “Everything is falling apart.” “I can’t miss.” “I have to be perfect.” “That shot was terrible.” “She is so much better than me.” “He never chokes like I do.” “I know I’m going to double fault.” “Here comes the meltdown.” “I should be winning.” “I shouldn’t be nervous.” “I should be better than this.” The problem with harmful self-talk is not that it is negative. The problem is that it is not useful. It does not help you compete. It does not help you recover. It does not help you play better. The question to ask yourself: Is this thought helping me or hurting me?
Apply It Today:
During your next practice or match, catch one harmful thought. Just notice it. Do not try to change it yet. Write down: “I noticed myself thinking: __. That thought was (helping / hurting) me.”
Reflection Prompt:
Would you talk to a teammate the way you talk to yourself? Why or why not?
