Stage 14 — The Language Reset

Stage Title: The Language Reset

Estimated Time: 12 minutes

What You’ll Learn:

• How to replace harmful self-talk with useful self-talk

• Specific language swaps for common tennis situations

Core Lesson:

Here are specific language swaps for common situations: Instead of “I stink.” “I always choke.” “I can’t believe I missed that.” “Here we go again.” Try “I’m struggling right now, but I can compete through this.” “I’m feeling pressure. I need to slow down and play one clear point.” “That one is over. Next point.” “Reset. One point at a time.” Instead of Try “I’m so nervous.” “I should be winning.” “I’m mentally weak.” “This is terrible.” The formula for a language reset: 1. Notice the harmful thought 2. Pause “Nerves mean I care. Breathe and play.” “The score is the score. Play the point.” “I’m having a hard moment. That does not mean I am weak.” “This is hard. I can handle hard.” 3. Say the replacement phrase (out loud or silently) 4. Take one breath 5. Move on

Apply It Today:

Choose one language swap from the list above. Try it this week when the situation comes up. Write down after: “I felt _. Instead of saying _, I said _. It helped because _.”

Reflection Prompt:

What is one phrase you want to stop saying to yourself? What will you say instead?
